Mentoring

CAPT’s consultancy is often provided through a mentoring arrangement.

“Because they’re independent... not involved in the local politics... they can say things I can’t and... what they’ve said has helped get people to listen more and take it on board.”

What is mentoring?

Mentoring has been described as having ‘a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction’ (Crosby). CAPT consultants work alongside staff in organisations as an adviser and coach – transferring skills and expertise to help the mentee achieve the targets that they have set for themselves and their agency.

CAPT’s mentoring has already helped staff in many agencies over the past four years through the government funded Making the Link project. This expertise is now available as a paid for service.

How mentoring helps

CAPT’s mentoring/consultancy service:

  • increases your skills, knowledge and confidence
  • raises the priority of accident prevention locally
  • helps you to use the accident prevention evidence base more effectively
  • equips you to work more effectively with partners and other stakeholders.

Feedback about CAPT’s mentoring

The independent evaluation of CAPT’s mentoring programme by the Charities Evaluation Services (CES) has highlighted key elements:

The reason for taking up the service

“One of the key drivers was to get support around the evidence base... they [CAPT] are the experts in the field... We wanted that link to the evidence and what else is happening nationally, what other areas are doing so we can learn from that too.”

Providing direction

"They have helped us be clear that we’re focusing on the right issues and helped us be clear on what information we need and from whom... They have helped us raise the profile of the work and bring people together where this might otherwise have taken us a lot longer to instigate.”

A big advantage

“Because they’re independent... not involved in the local politics... they can say things I can’t and... what they’ve said has helped get people to listen more and take it on board.”
