Child Safety Week 20-26 June 2011
With just over six weeks to go to this year’s Child Safety Week, we’re proud to reveal this year’s theme: Take a second look for safety.
Child Safety Week takes place on 20-26 June 2011.
The idea of taking a second look that just takes a second works on the same basis as the double-take – a second glance just to make sure that a hot drink’s out of reach, the safety gate’s closed, the blind cords are tied up, a second to check the smoke alarm’s working, a quick tug to check that the car seat’s fitted correctly…
By encouraging parents to adopt the second look, we hope it becomes a habit to the point they’re not even thinking about it or aware that they’re doing it.
Imagine crossing a road – you look both ways before you step out, but do you think about it before you do it? Probably not – it’s become a habit, and there’s no reason why the prevention of other accidents shouldn’t be the same.
We’re realistic though. Parents of young children have busy lives. That’s why the key message behind ‘Take a second look’ is that preventing children having serious accidents is easy and it doesn’t take long – in many cases, it’s instantaneous.
We’re also keen for children and young people to take a second look for safety too. Worryingly, a third of young people and children injured crossing the road admit they didn’t look before stepping off the kerb. By helping children learn how to keep themselves safe, we’re giving them skills for life.
