Child Safety Week – A super success

A huge thank you for your support of Child Safety Week. This year was a great success with incredible media coverage and thousands of activities and events taking place across the UK.

We were overwhelmed with the support from local organisations who embraced the safety hero theme, made Safety pledges and nominated their local Safety Heroes.

Extensive media coverage enhanced the week

Child Safety Week was reported in all media outlets – TV, radio, newspapers and online. Our CEO, Katrina Phillips was interviewed on ITV Midlands and accident prevention messages were heard across the airwaves through interviews on many national and local radio stations. In Scotland, we were interviewed on consecutive days on BBC Radio Scotland.

Child safety hit the newsstands with stories in the national press, including The Telegraph and the Scottish Sunday Mail. Child Safety Week articles in local papers delivered safety messages to thousands of families throughout the UK. Bloggers profiled a range of accident prevention issues, and Twitter and Facebook involved parents and practitioners alike in active discussion.

Thousands of activities and events engaged parents, carers and children

Local Child Safety Week activities and events reached parents, grandparents, carers, children and young people nationwide. During a “super hero day” at a Bradford children’s centre, families pledged safety actions, made safety hero masks and were given the latest safety advice. A centre in Essex asked children to make their own traffic lights and invited a road safety officer to come and talk to parents. Our event map was jammed packed with activities and early feedback from our evaluation shows that people really enjoyed the safety hero themed resources this year.

The Big Taste Test brought the poisons message to life for parents

The Big Taste Test provided an opportunity to all to sample Bitrex®, a bittering agent which is added to some household cleaning products to deter children from swallowing the contents. This year more radio stations than ever carried out the test on-air including the Asian Star whose producer said that he was doing it "for the pure pleasure of putting our breakfast show presenter through it!".

Children’s centres were also keen participants, the Friarge Children’s Centre in North Yorkshire reported that "families were disgusted by the Taste Test and it got the message across!".

In Scotland, Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs, visited Rutland Nursery in Edinburgh to join the children as they learnt about road safety from a community police officer – where she also took the Big Taste Test!
