Thank you to everyone for supporting Child Safety Week!
We had a great Child Safety Week and want to extend a big thank you to absolutely everyone involved. We hope you had a good one too.
This year, awareness of Child Safety Week hit an all-time high of 31%, which is also one of the highest of similar campaign weeks.
We’re very pleased with this result, but we can only take part of the credit. The insight provided by the evaluation forms that you’ve returned shows that once again, its success very much boils down to the activities, sessions, events and outreach that you do with families which really matters.
The forms make for inspiring reading.
Many people said that one of the key benefits is that it gives them a ‘hook’ for doing focusing on child accident prevention, and one commented that they’d be talking about doing something for so long, but that the week provided a catalyst for actually doing something!
Here’s a quick round-up of some of your comments:
“It was an opportunity for us to meet one of our targets, preventing hospital admissions due to accidental injuries.”
Integrated Children’s Centre Manager, Lancaster
“It gives us a good chance to highlight safety issues and steps parents can take to prevent accidents with their children.”
Outreach Development Worker, Southampton
“The Fire and Rescue Service community safety work promotes child safety continuously through the year, Child Safety Week provides us with a media opportunity to promote safety messages to a wider audience.”
Education Advisor, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service
We’re also very pleased to hear about the types of activities held, which reflect how committed, creative and resourceful organisations and their staff can be.
A Children’s Centre in Barnstaple held a safety morning for families with young children. They had a mini beach area and road/pedestrian area where children could role play, with the police, ambulance and fire services on hand.
The Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service ran a leaflet and poster campaign across the county distributed via fire stations. They also organised a visit by the crew to Oswestry hospital, outreach visits to a retail park and supermarket where they gave out advice and child safety leaflets. To get publicity, they sent a press release to local papers and promoted across schools and the council, using Facebook and their website, and were interviewed on Radio Shropshire.
And these activities are effective. The top three things that parents said they did as a result of CSW are:
- practising road safety with their child
- testing their smoke alarm;
- and moving cleaning products and medicines out of reach.
