For Child Safety Week 2017, we are honouring the power of sharing to keep children safe. We know that nothing has more impact than the voice of experience.

A friend shudders recounting the horrible shock of their child coming close to a serious accident; a health visitor shares stories about accidents they’ve seen; the local paper’s front page features parents whose child died in an accident, sharing what they’ve learnt so others don’t suffer. The strongest voices are the ones we relate to and respect.

This Child Safety Week our theme is Safe children: sharing is caring. We are asking friends, families, communities and professionals to show they care by sharing their experience and knowledge – not just about the horrors of accidents, but also the really practical, simple things they do to prevent them.

Simple steps to start sharing

  • Share this email with colleagues and other partners you want to engage in child accident prevention – so they can sign up to Child Safety Week here.
  • Like CAPT on Facebook and follow us on TwitterTip: If you use your personal account, you won’t miss our advice posts for parents that you can share straight away.

The free events will explore effective commissioning and service delivery, so that evidence-based interventions are integrated into early years service specifications, and frontline staff are supported to build safety advice into routine contacts with parents.

Short on time for accident prevention?

We know that time to deliver accident prevention is being squeezed by competing demands. Minimise your time and maximise your impact by using CAPTs ready-made resources.

Our Preventing accidents session plans make it simple… but don’t take our word for it:

“The pack was ideal, really easy to use, bright and colourful. I used it with several of our family groups and one-to-one with families. It was great for starting conversations and bringing up topics that otherwise might be difficult to share.”

“The discussion cards enabled families to share ideas and suggestions for common safety concerns like at teatime with toddlers or small toys belonging to older siblings.”

The colourful flash cards bring common accident scenarios to life, helping you to harness the power of families sharing experiences.

All the information you need is on the back of each card, so you don’t need to be an expert in accident prevention to manage a discussion that is engaging and memorable for parents.

The pack costs just £25 plus P&P. And we’re offering 20 free One Step Ahead wallcharts – ideal for giving out to families or for displays in communal areas – with every order received before the end of February 2017. Order your pack here

No budget for resources?

The free Child Safety Week Action Pack is brimming with ideas and advice about running group sessions or one-to-one’s. There are downloadable activity sheets for parents and children too, to help make your work really engaging.

Simply make sure you and your colleagues are signed up to hear all about it.
