Accidents happen in seconds but the consequences can last a lifetime. For example, a young child’s delicate skin burns far more easily than ours, leading to years of painful skin grafts, the trauma of visible scarring and disabilities caused by ‘clawed’ hands or feet. A head injury from a serious fall can lead to memory loss, learning problems and personality changes.
Accidental injury is one of the biggest killers of our children and a leading cause of disability and disfigurement for otherwise healthy children. The poorest children are at greatest risk. They are far more likely to be killed or seriously injured in avoidable accidents.
Support from trusts and foundations enables us to reach deep into deprived communities, delivering projects like Scar Free.
Thanks to Scar Free’s funders, vulnerable babies and toddlers across Manchester are spared life-changing burns, disadvantaged parents are empowered to do what works, and grassroots groups in deprived communities are equipped with practical resources and know-how.
Other trusts and foundations support our three core activities: spreading knowledge and changing behaviour; supporting frontline staff working in local communities; and providing a centre of specialist knowledge and influencing for change.
